What you may think is helping your hair may actually be hurting it. Most “off the shelf” products claim to have all the solutions for half the cost of the salon brands, but what we don’t know is that most of these products just mask the real problem. The ingredients in a lot of these products will eventually dry your hair out, leaving it brittle and damaged. Here are ingredients to stay away from:

Silicone-Based Products: Silicone coats the hair shaft for a shiny sleek finish, but it prevents the real nutrients from conditioners to penetrate the hair shaft.

Alcohol-Based Products:  Alcohol products, which are often used in styling gels, hair spray or mousses, is very drying ingredient for the hair. When hair gets dried out it becomes brittle and losses its elasticity. Over time breakage and hair loss will become more prevalent.

Zinc Pyrithione and Coal Tar: These ingredients are commonly found in dandruff shampoos. While they may help clean dandruff away, they can be very harsh on your skin and hair.

Cheap Shampoo: When buying shampoo it’s important to be wary drug store brands. Some brands strip color and remove hair’s natural oils. When choosing a shampoo look for one that is low in sulfates and contains moisturizing ingredients.

Paraben Based Products: Parabens are used to kill bacteria in water-based solutions. Inherently they do have some toxicity to human cells and can be absorbed through the skin.
